Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used on pregnant women for thousands of years. This ancient medical system helps to heal and promote health from the inside out for soon to be moms. Millions of women across the world use acupuncture to help them with pregnancy ailments because it is a safe, natural, and whole body approach. Acupuncture is not only utilized as a treatment for thousands of years but the research has shown it to be effective for many conditions during pregnancy including morning sickness and pain relief. It is also safe and effective during pregnancy when performed by a certified and licensed acupuncturist who has experience in pregnancy care.
Many women are turning to acupuncture to relieve their morning sickness and fatigue during the 1st trimester, however for some women it can linger throughout the entire pregnancy. Acupuncture point, known as PC 6 or Pericardium 6, is a well-known point to not only relieve morning sickness but also prevent it from reoccurring. This point can be stimulated with acupuncture needles or acupressure to help to calm and soothe nausea and vomiting. Fatigue is also very present for women in their first trimester. Acupuncture can help to increase energy and regulate moods. This allows for a more positive outlook, stabilized energy levels, and the ability to exercise throughout pregnancy.
The 2nd and 3rd trimester’s women are often seeking relief from low back, sciatic, and hip pain. Some moms may experience anxiety and depression during their pregnancy as well. Acupuncture offers a safe and natural approach to helping these types of conditions without the side effects that many drugs can produce. Often times, pharmaceutical can lead newly pregnant moms to worry about the side effects it may be causing. This is alternative treatment for moms who want to take a natural approach.
One of the big benefits acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can bring to pregnant women is helping to turn breech babies and allowing for a smooth and easy delivery. There is an ancient acupuncture point known as UB 67 or Urinary Bladder 67 that is at the base of the little toe which is an empirical point for turning breech babies. Research from Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine concluded that “Acupuncture plus moxibustion is more effective than observation in revolving fetuses in breech presentation. Such a method appears to be a valid option for women willing to experience a natural birth.”
It is important for women to know they have choices when it comes to their bodies and their babies. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine allows women freedom to experience a happy and healthy pregnancy. This form of treatment can be safely and easily combined with Western Medicine care to create an integrative approach to prenatal health.
